Why our own website is a static React site
We rebuilt codeasthetics.com as pre-rendered HTML with no server process. Here is why, and what it costs us.
Our previous website ran a Node server, a database and a background job to sync content. For a site that changes a few times a month, that is a lot of moving parts to keep patched.
What we changed
The site is now built with React and pre-rendered to plain HTML at build time. Content lives in version-controlled files and is edited through a small admin that runs only on our own machines. A deploy copies static files to the server — nothing else runs in production.
What we gain
- Speed: every page is HTML on first byte, with no server rendering on the request path.
- SEO: search engines see complete content, meta tags and structured data without executing JavaScript.
- Security: there is no application server or database to attack on the public host.
- Cost: the site needs a web server and nothing more.
What we give up
Content changes need a rebuild and deploy. For a marketing site that is a few seconds, and it gives us a reviewable history of every change.
